OUGD504 - Design for Web: Getting Started Session 1 Part 1

As part of our Design for Web brief, we have to create a website based on the research we did over Summer. We had five questions to answer which are:

  1. What is your subject matter
  2. What are you trying to communicate?
  3. Who will be/could be your audience of end user?
  4. What will be the most appropriate/effective form of content?
  5. What is the function and purpose?

As my research topic was Finland, I came up with a mindmap of options that I could go into:

I highlighted the areas that I wouldn't mind taking further:

  • Architectural places to visit
  • A website for campers interested in camping in one of Finlands 37 national parks
  • A new website for the Air Guitar world championships
  • A restaurant rebrand due to the Restaurant Day event
  • Redesign a Finnish restaurant's website that I've researched
  • Create a website for the Northern Lights
  • Redesign existing hotel website
  • Create website for Lapland activity such as reindeer rides
  • Create a website for the igloo hotel
I then thought about these options, and I decided to look further at ideas to do with Lapland as there is a lot of scope there, and when I was researching them over Summer, most websites to do with Lapland were in need of a revamp.

I have decided to create a website for the Igloo Hotels in Lapland, as they are an amazing invention and probably only exist there, but the website doesn't seem inspiring or make me want to visit the hotel. Now I have my idea, I answered the questions:

What is your subject matter
Finnish Igloo Hotel in Lapland

What are you trying to communicate?
The uniqueness and bespoke qualities of the hotel and why it is something you want to try. How people can book a room, can see the prices and make an informed decision about it as it will be informative

Who will be/could be your audience or end user?
They could be families, skiiers, nature lovers, groups of friends, couples and being on christmas holidays. They would be going for a special occasion (christmas, anniversary), have quite a lot of disposable income or saved up for a while to see the Northern Lights as the hotel is quite bespoke and rates are high especially during peak season. However, people could be visiting Lapland, and only stay here for a night or two to experience it and staying at another hotel the rest of the time so therefore won't need as much money.

What is the function/purpose?
It will be a website essentially promoting and selling a product so will need to be informative and clear and allow customers to buy from the site.

What sector/industry will you be designing for?
Travel and tourism
