OUGD504 - Design for Print: Survey Results

Question 1 - Do you think the traditional print methods, such as monoprinting and screenprinting, are accessible to all students?
Although the same amount of people have answered 'Yes', the answers 'Some' and 'No' combined are higher, therefore meaning more students who answered the survey don't think the print methods are accessible. This is a problem because for a lot of briefs students would want to, or have to, use the facilities to answer them as well as experiment and learn about the processes. So not feeling like they are accessible limits students in how they answer a brief and what they can learn from the facilities available. My pack will help this problem by informing students what's available and more information about them so that they will become more accessible.

Question 2 - Do you use the print rooms are Rossington/Vernon St and Blenheim?
The Blenheim print room proved to be the least used with nearly half of students only using it during inductions, whereas people regularly use the Vernon St print room. This could suggest that the Blenheim campus doesn't offer enough processes, isn't as accessible, the inductions weren't helpful or the tutors are hard to talk to. By having more information about the processes available and the techniques that can be used would give students more knowledge about how they can apply print processes to their work and therefore use the print rooms more.

Question 3 - How many traditional printing methods (such as etching) are you aware of in the print room at Rossington/Vernon St?
The majority of people said they knew some processes, then that they knew most of the processes, and the least amount said that they knew all of the processes. This is what I assumed from experience, but the survey confirms that it is a problem and students need to be made more aware of the processes that are available to them.

Question 4 - How many traditional printing methods (such as screenprinting) are you aware of in the print room at Blenheim?
The overwhelming majority of people said that they only knew 'some' of the processes available at Blenheim which proves that students don't know everything that is available and need to know more, which is something my info pack should look at.

Question 5 - Do you think the inductions in the first year are helpful?
There isn't an overwhelming majority of people who think the inductions are helpful, so by my pack informing students about the processes, what they are, where to do them, the techniques you can product, how difficult they are and how much they cost will help students, this should help with being able to know basic information about processes.

Question 6 - Do you think having more advanced inductions throughout the year would be beneficial?
The overwhelming majority of people have answered 'Yes', and though this is something I could mention to tutors to improve for next year, although it isn't something my info pack can directly impact. However by my pack informing students what's available they can then enquire more about them and arrange inductions with tutors themselves.

Question 7 - Do you feel comfortable asking the tutors in the print room about the different processes available?
Although more people have said yes, this isn't the overwhelming majority of answers, and so there could be more improvements on this. By having the tickets this will help students know a bit more about the processes, and will make them more confident asking tutors about the process as they will already have some background knowledge.

Question 8 - What processes would you like to learn more about?
This was to help me figure out what processes to include on my tickets, as I only want to do about 5.  The only problem with the results is that some of the processes I won't be able to do with my concept. For example, I wouldn't be able to do bookbinding because I wanted to use the process on my ticket, and so this wouldn't work. It also wouldn't work in my poster format. Letterpress would also be hard, because at the moment it isn't in use at Blenheim, and I would have to use the letters they have which wouldn't match the rest of my designs.

Question 9 - Do you know what equipment to use for the processes and where they are?
These answers show that the only processes which people know where the equipment is for is linoprinting, screenprinting and letterpress. Screenprinting is the most popular process so this is a given, and people did linoprinting in schools so they would also know how to do that. Based on these answers, it could perhaps mean that people haven't said they want to learn more about processes in the previous question because they don't even know where to do them. By having the location icons dangling above equipment in the print room this will help solve the problem of not knowing where to do the processes.

Question 10 - Thank you for answering this survey. Can you please state the course and level you are on, and add anything else you would like to add regarding print processes at college?
These answers show the people who answered the survey, and some more personal feedback.

It's hard know what exactly is available and if It's possible to do it properly, for example. Embossing which is with laser cut wood and copper plate etching. It would be nice to have some sort of presentation at the start of the year to be told what's possible to do and what's not instead of having to chase up and discover what is available in the hidden corners of the college and what we'll have to outsource somewhere else.

2nd year vis com. The BW screenprinting induction has been done twice with me, it's shockingly bad, I have no confidence working in that room, they say "just ask if you have a problem and when you ask they look at like you like you are annoying them when they never even explained it in the first place.
