OUGD503 - Responsive: BEAR - Drawings

Here are some of the drawings I did for characters. However, I mainly went straight to screen.

OUGD503 - Responsive: Companions Pet Shop - Presenting To The Client

I made two design boards with the main logo and two variation on them to present to the client. I sent these in an email.
Four days later I got a reply saying that they liked the logo, but that they were thinking of expanding the business to sell higher quality dog food to more upmarket customers in a different location. This would have influenced my design decisions so I was quite annoyed that they didn't tell me this throughout the project as they had been asking me a few times to get started on the logo.

So the logo won't be used for the foreseeable future, but it is theirs for when they need to use it.

OUGD503 - Responsive: Companions Pet Shop - Designing

I started designing on screen for the logo. I went with the clean design that I drew because I thought this most suited the client.

I started creating the typeface. I used circles to create these two letters. I like how the C curves around the O.

I then did the M which I was happy with.

I also started drawing a paw print to go in the O.

To get the rounded edges on the text I was creating, I chose an offset path with round joins.

Here is the word Companions I made. I was really happy with it as it looks professional.

I then started drawing a dog bone to go around the word.

I made it green to match the clients wants.

I put the logo into the bone, and see how it looked in monochrome. It looks clear and doesn't seem to be missing any element because of the colour.

I made it green and central.

I also created the word Pet Shop, and tried it without the bone.

I put the Pet Shop outside of the bone, and made it smaller.

I tried the pawprint in the A instead.

I didn't like this.

I tried it both of the O's but it seemed to much.

I made the first one a lighter green, and the second one I made the Pet Shop smaller.

Here is the final logo.

Here are the two different variations I am going to send to the client.

Here is the board for the main logo.

OUGD503 - Responsive: Collaborative - BEAR Pitch

For Fred's responsive session we had to write our roles and responsibilities and sign them so we will remember down the line what we each said we would do.

Pitch
In the session, we pitched our idea to two groups, which we designed boards for.

Feedback
The feedback we got was really positive, and two suggestions were made:

  • We could slot things inside the pack if we didn't have enough space on the back for the things we want to include
  • Children/Parents could go online and print their own templates so that they could colour them in themselves and print the background setting off for it
I really like the idea of being able to download templates online, as it encourages children to be creative and take it further.

Luckily, Jane was in our group and as she has three young children (4,7 and 9) that is our perfect age range. We asked her if her children would like it, and she said yes, we've hit the nail on the head. She also said that they would want to create their own versions to add to the collection which was encouraging to hear. After Jane's feedback I feel even more confident about starting the project.

Action Plan
We then had to write an action plan of what we plan to do separately and together, and with deadlines. Doing this made us realise how much work we have set ourselves, and doing 3 boards might be the only possible action instead of 5 due to the amount of other work we have as well.

OUGD503 - Responsive: Companions Pet Shop Ideas

I wanted the logo to be:
  • Friendly
  • Appeal to old and young customers
  • Compete with big brands such as Pets At Home
  • Clean
The client has asked for the logo to have a paw print somewhere and be green, which I am going to consider when drawing up ideas.

I tried a more script style at first as this isn't something I had done before and would appeal to a more mature audience looking traditional and well established.

I also tried a different style which was a lot cleaner and more contemporary.

OUGD503 - Responsive: Collaborative Brief: BEAR Concept

Our concept is to create a woodland tabletop playset for each letter that children can collect, build and play with. They will learn about Bear's friends and their natural habitat.

The brief states
“You can produce as many designs as you see fit to demonstrate your thinking”
We plan to create five box designs so that you get the idea of what we want to achieve for the whole alphabet. These letters will be:

  • Mountains
  • Treetops
  • Woodland
  • Rivers
  • Campfire
The reason we chose to focus on a woodland area is because the brand is organic, natural and is where bears live, which is the name of the brand. We feel that lots can be learnt about woodlands, such as names of trees, facts about mountains and information on all the animals that live there. We also thought that these parents wouldn't let their children sit around on their playstation all day as they are proactive in giving them healthy food, so will appreciate that this will encourage their kids to go outside. Obesity is a problem these days and too many kids stay in, so promoting the outdoors will hopefully encourage the children to go and play outside. We feel that this will:

“Helping kids to learn without them realising that they were doing so”

The child will be able to cut out the objects on the back of the box, and build them to create a set that they can play with. This will encourage their craft skills and can make their own toys, as well as learn and play at the same time. It could also encourage interaction, as the parent will have to help cut the shapes, and it can be played with their siblings, rather than a standard game on the back of a cereal which are usually quite solitary. We have focused on the crafty part of the brief, but it is also going to be educational with the facts we will include on the back.
“Really educational or crafty”
“Approach this in a fun, not scholarly way”

Each box will have a complete set on it so that the kid doesn't feel like it is missing anything - for example, treetops will have trees but also an animal it can play with, such as a woodpecker. However, it will also make them want to grow the collection and have a bigger playset, which fits these parts of the brief:
“How will you build excitement among kids, and anticipation for future boxes?”
“The icing on the cake would be a reason to want to collect them all”
Once they have built the set which will take some time, they can then play with it, as well as learn the facts on the box, fitting this part of the criteria:
“It would be enjoyed for more than one breakfast sitting”

We drew some mindmaps thinking of what we could include on the boxes:

OUGD503 - Responsive: Roles and Responsibilities

This morning we bought three briefs along that we wanted to choose from as part of the collaborative brief.

We picked three YCN briefs:

  • Marriot Hotels
  • BEAR
  • Royal Albert Hall
We read through them and highlighted key words and thought of the pro's and cons for each project.

Royal Albert Hall
  • Registered Charity
  • Classical music, jazz, folk and world music, circus, rock and pop concerts, ballet and opera, dance, comedy, tennis, charity concerts
  • Creative campaign to raise awareness of our charitable status
  • Encourage individual donations to our fundraising efforts
Pros
  • Interesting brief
  • A lot of substance to it
  • Challenging
  • For a good cause
Cons
  • Can't go to the place
  • How would we get photographs if we can't go
  • No immediate ideas
Marriot Hotels
  • We would like you to create a campaign to encourage our target audience to join us in co-creating and re-imagining the future of travel at TravelBrilliantly.com
  • The website is where we capture and celebrate ideas
  • We want you to inspire people to share their ideas for the future of travel with us
  • Being in the know is the new socio-culture
Pros
  • Get to do web
  • Travel is a topic we're interested in
Cons
  • What is the brief actually asking???
BEAR
  • You can produce as many designs as you see fit to demonstrate your thinking
  • We launched cereal with eight back of packs that each took a letter theme
  • Kids are reading them religiously and repeatedly
  • We could make the alphabet theme more focal
  • How could you help us make it become a clearer, stronger idea where kids can't wait to find the next letter in the alphabet?
Pros
  • Thought of an original idea
  • Fun to do
  • Light-hearted
Cons
  • Not very challenging
  • Always do similar briefs
