OUGD503 - Responsive: Session 3

We discussed in small groups our briefs that we've chosen, and now we have to answer some questions about them.

5 Most important words on brief

  • Convenience
  • Feasibility
  • Fresh
  • Format
  • Display
I chose convenience because it says how the customer experience is key to the brand, and I need to think about the opening, closing and handling of the product.

I chose feasibility because the brief asks you to consider the feasibility of the format and how it will be transported, handled and used in the retail environment.

I chose fresh because one of the considerations is to see how you can keep the product fresh for longer, which is a big part of buying meat.

I chose format as it is used considerably in the brief, for the feasibility; how it's economically and logistically viable; how to revolutionise current packaging and how to display the format.

I also chose display as it asks you to consider the shelf presence of the product and puts a lot of focus onto this.

5 things you need to consider
  • Materials for keeping food fresh
  • Keeping waste to a minimum
  • How to make protective packaging for transportation
  • How it will be displayed on the shelf - size, impact, compactness
  • How to put across it is a premium bacon brand
The brief asks to consider keeping food fresh for longer, so I need to research into materials that could be used to help this.

5 design products related to the brief
  • Meat packaging
  • Retail packaging
  • Sustainable packaging
  • Transportation goods
  • Labels
  • Boxes
5 places related to your brief
  • Farms
  • Supermarkets
  • Transport good lorries
  • Home
  • Restaurants
Who is your audience?

  • People who go food shopping - people living on their own, 18+, families etc
  • Middle-upper class as its a premium bacon range
  • People who care about the impact on the environment
  • People who pick products based on the quality and freshness of them
  • Meat eaters
Who should your audience be?
  • As the brief did not specify an audience I created the last set of points myself, so this is a more specified option.
  • People who cook fresh food, as the brief wants a product that stays fresh for longer, indicating it is aimed at people who have more time on their hands to cook food, perhaps for their families or cohabitants. As usually people who buy frozen food are in a hurry, eat out a lot, buy budget ranges or eat alone (so don't waste food). People who cook food from fresh usually care about the quality of it and where it comes form otherwise they would just eat readymeals, so this fits in with that it is a premium bacon range and the brief wants us to consider the impacts on the environment.
Who could the audience be?
  • Parents who cook for their family
  • People with a reasonable income job who like bacon
  • Couples who are cooking each other a meal
  • People cooking a fabulous fry up
What do 'they' do?
  • Work a 9-5 job as they have time to cook in the evening
  • Are part of a family who have meals together each night
  • People who wake up on Sunday's and have fry-ups
Where do they go?

  • Football match
  • Pub
  • Shopping
  • Yearly holidays
What do they buy?
  • Branded food and products
Who do they live with?
  • Husband/Wife
  • Children
  • Couples
  • Friends
  • Alone
What can you do?
  • Create a generic packaged meat product
  • Create a format using materials that aren't usually used
  • Create a package based on other Danepak products
  • Create a luxury package as it's a premium bacon brand
  • Create an unusual shaped package to break conventions
  • Experiment with how packaging is stacked together to save space
  • Look at environmentally friendly packaging
  • Look at how to open and close the package - resealable, tear, fold over etc
  • Look at what materials keep products fresh for longer
  • Focus on the graphics and branding to make it have striking shelf presence
What are you going to do?
  • Look at what materials are sustainable
  • Look at how to create a resealable pack
  • Look at how to keep it compact to save space
Why are you going to do it?
  • To answer the brief
  • Challenge myself
  • Learn more about how food needs to be packaged
  • See how to make it easier for the consumer
  • How to keep meat fresh for longer
What could you do?
  • Propose the packaging for the rest of the range

We then had to fill out a Concept Statement form:

What are you going to do?
  • Research into what makes a food package appealing for consuemers to handle - open/closing, storage space, saving some for next day, not having to touch meat etc
  • Look at shelf presence and how to make the product stand out and save space
  • Look at materials that are sustainable, keep product fresh and minimum waste
Why are you going to do it?
  • To look at how to consider sustainable packaging
  • I'm interested in food packaging - how it looks, format, materials, functions
  • To create a package that fits into everyday life
Who are you doing it for?
  • Starpack - the site that holds the competitions
  • Danepak as they are setting the brief
  • Peoples/Blogs interested in package deisgn
How are you going to do it?
  • Using printing methods such as screenprinting to print onto different materials/show premium side
  • Look at how different packaging could be used such as resealable food bags
  • Create nets and prototypes
  • Use appropriate software to create the design
  • Go to supermarkets and look at existing packaging/shelf presence
What do you aim to produce?
  • Environmentally friendly/recyclable packaging
  • A physical mock-up of the package
  • Something which is easy for the consumer to keep fresh/refrigerated
  • Something that stands out on the shelf
  • Proposals on how it can be extended throughout the range
