OUGD504 - Design for Print and Web: Choosing ISTD Briefs

After we had picked our three briefs, we had to highlight the words in them that stood out to us.

Once we had a better idea on what brief we wanted to do based on how well the brief was written and what it was asking, we answered some questions about that brief.

5 Problems Brief Proposes
  • Encourage people to want to go to a restaurant rather than watch TV
  • How could a typographic theme be applied throughout a restaurant? Branding, interior etc
  • Solve branding problem - create a concept
  • Define the market - is it for special occasions, family lunch, business, designers
  • How to apply it to print/screen/combined media
How Can I Solve This Problem
  • Define an audience - who would want to go?
  • Think of a menu - appropriate food/names
  • Combine food/type - moulds/photography
  • Think of printed/screen material that is needed
  • Research what audience want from a restaurant
5 Facts about Content/Subject
  • Something appealing about going to a restaurant - family dinner, special occasion etc
  • There re 24/7 food channels on TV
  • Every aspect is considered - production, delivery, prep, purchase
  • Restaurants offer an appropriate environment to make an occassion successful
  • Mutton Quad - tpye pun
5 Facts about the Audience
  • It's up to the designer to define
  • Who is interested in typography? - designers, printers, educators, typographers
  • Why would type geeks go? - business dates, work do's, colleagues going
  • What do they want? - in jokes, things to relate to, good food
  • No age range is specified
5 Things about Content I Want to Communicate
  • Type jokes/relateable things - interest to designers
  • Dear branding - appropriate/purposeful formats
  • Technical/contextual references
  • Make food/atmosphere appealing
  • Something appropriate for designers/printers/typographers to have business datse/work do's at
5 Things I Don't Know About The Brief
  • Specified audience
  • Mandatory requirements regarding format
  • How interior/exterior proposals can be proposed and is this mandatory
  • Price - is it upmarket, cheap + cheerful in mind?
  • How to take photographs of food/material professional
  • How to create moulds
  • How many resolutions are expected to be done - drink labels, food packaging for kitchen, uniform etc
