OUGD503 - Responsive: Keith Baldock Artist Brief

My Grandad is a local artist and wanted a new website to replace his current one which would be easier to update with new paintings.

His current website is very dated, and not suitable for the web. When it was originally coded, the coder placed a PDF version of his printed brochure as the content, so it is one big picture suited to print. There are also old fashioned effects such as a view counter, gradient on the text and hover effects on the navigation that don't work well together.

Here are some screenshots of his current website:

On the portfolio pages, the images are inserted using Photoshop Web Gallery which makes it near impossible to update and takes a long time. It has also added lots of unnecessary information which makes it look quite unprofessional.

Brief Title
Keith Baldock Artist Website

The Brief
I have been asked to design and develop a website for a local artist which will be easy to update with new paintings and looks professional. The name of the website will be Keith Baldock Artist so I also need to make a new logo for it.

Considerations
I need to consider how to make it easy to update with new paintings as he is always making new paintings which can be sold. Currently it isn't easy to do and hasn't ever been updated, so this needs to be changed.
I also need to consider how to make it appropriate and user-friendly for the older audience and my granddad, as he is 76 and a lot of his customers are older as well. This will include easy to read typefaces, colours and a layout that they will predict.

Concept/Proposition
I am going to design and develop a website which presents his paintings well, is easy to use and looks professional. I will use a serif font and a dark colour for the main colour scheme so that it suits the audience. I will put his contact details on every page as customers will need to email him about his prints, and I will make it automatically open up the users emails as this will probably be easier for an older audience. I want to make it clean and professional so that the user can easily see everything on the page and navigate through it with ease. On the current website it is quite hard to see the products/services he sells because it is amongst pictures in an unclear layout so I want to make this stand out more as the user will be interested in it.

Background
Keith Baldock has been a local artist for around 40 years and he paints mainly local scenes and portraits for local people. He is well known for his seascapes, probably his most popular paintings. He also does a lot of commissions for people's portraits and animals. He mainly uses oil paint, but also uses watercolours sometimes and paints a pastel portrait everyday.

Target Audience
A lot of his people who buy his paintings are local people, fisherman, people whose relatives were fisherman, portraiture presents for people's birthdays, Christmas, graduation etc. People who buy his prints are usually older, but he does get a lot of younger customers who want portraits painting.

Mandatory Requirements
  • Easy to update photos
  • Easy to use for older people
  • Contact details are visible
Tone of Voice
The tone of voice should reflect the work that he does and be friendly so that customers feel at ease approaching him about buying his work.

Deliverables
  • A fully coded website which is live
  • All the files in the right directories
