OUGD503 - Responsive: Collaborative Brief: BEAR Concept

Our concept is to create a woodland tabletop playset for each letter that children can collect, build and play with. They will learn about Bear's friends and their natural habitat. 

The brief states 
“You can produce as many designs as you see fit to demonstrate your thinking”
We plan to create five box designs so that you get the idea of what we want to achieve for the whole alphabet. These letters will be:

  • Mountains
  • Treetops
  • Woodland
  • Rivers
  • Campfire
The reason we chose to focus on a woodland area is because the brand is organic, natural and is where bears live, which is the name of the brand. We feel that lots can be learnt about woodlands, such as names of trees, facts about mountains and information on all the animals that live there. We also thought that these parents wouldn't let their children sit around on their playstation all day as they are proactive in giving them healthy food, so will appreciate that this will encourage their kids to go outside. Obesity is a problem these days and too many kids stay in, so promoting the outdoors will hopefully encourage the children to go and play outside. We feel that this will:

“Helping kids to learn without them realising that they were doing so”

The child will be able to cut out the objects on the back of the box, and build them to create a set that they can play with. This will encourage their craft skills and can make their own toys, as well as learn and play at the same time. It could also encourage interaction, as the parent will have to help cut the shapes, and it can be played with their siblings, rather than a standard game on the back of a cereal which are usually quite solitary. We have focused on the crafty part of the brief, but it is also going to be educational with the facts we will include on the back.

Each box will have a complete set on it so that the kid doesn't feel like it is missing anything - for example, treetops will have trees but also an animal it can play with, such as a woodpecker. However, it will also make them want to grow the collection and have a bigger playset, which fits these parts of the brief:
“How will you build excitement among kids, and anticipation for future boxes?”
“The icing on the cake would be a reason to want to collect them all”
Once they have built the set which will take some time, they can then play with it, as well as learn the facts on the box, fitting this part of the criteria:
“It would be enjoyed for more than one breakfast sitting”
